Reduce your cost of living this season

03rd Oct 2022

With the huge rise in cost of living, everyone is concerned about managing their bills and reducing their energy use. Unfortunately, we can’t control the cost of energy, but we can suggest a few small changes that could reduce your energy bills this season.

Heat Pump Technology

When buying a new dryer, opting for a heat pump model is a fantastic option to try to reduce your bills. These dryers may take longer to dry your clothes, but the built-in heat pump technology makes them a lot more efficient.

Hot air absorbs moisture from your clothes to dry them. This air then passes through an evaporator, removing the moisture which is then stored in a tank. The remaining air is re-heated and re-circulated back into the drum to begin the process again.

There’s nothing better than drying your clothes outdoors, but when the British weather lets you down (very often!) make sure your dryer is an energy-efficient model.

VitaminCare+

Blomberg’s VitaminCare+ technology harnesses the power of nature inside your fridge freezer. Replicating the sun’s natural 24-hour light cycle, they use coloured LED lights. Vital nutrients and vitamins are preserved in your fruit and vegetables, keeping them fresher for longer, therefore reducing waste.

Eco Programmes

Dishwasher and washing machine programmes are a mixture of temperature, time, and water – a combination of these is determined by which one you choose. However, Eco Programmes are different. They use a lower temperature and less water than other settings. In general, they take a lot longer too. This is because heating the water takes up to 90% of the energy in a washing machine. A longer cycle doesn’t need to be as hot, thus reducing your energy consumption.

Induction Technology

You may not be aware that cooking with an induction hob is not only quicker but more energy efficient than other hobs. Heat is transferred directly into the pan rather than the cooking surface. The food is cooked quickly, without wasting any heat, making induction hobs the best option for saving on your energy bills.

Appliance Manuals

Most people throw the instruction manual straight into the bin when purchasing a new appliance. Don’t do this! It might contain important information on how to get the best from your machine.

Get familiar with all the cycles, settings, and programmes at your disposal, you might need to tailor them to your needs when attempting to reduce the amount of water and electricity you are using.

Large Appliances

There’s not much we can do about refrigeration appliances needing to be on all the time. But there is something you can do to save a little on your bills. Opening the fridge door too frequently means cool air can escape and your appliance will need to overcompensate to reach the correct temperature again. To save on your energy bills, reduce the times the fridge door is opened in your home.

Standby Mode

Switching all your phone chargers, games consoles, appliances, and TVs off at the wall when you’re not using them could save you more than you realise. There’s no real way of measuring exactly how much energy your plugs being left on is costing you, but it will be using electricity even if it is a small amount. For example, it’s estimated that turning off lights when you leave a room will save you approximately £46 a year.
