How to make the most of a small kitchen

21st Sep 2022

With the average house size shrinking every year, that means our kitchens are getting smaller too! Making the most of the space you have can be a challenge, sometimes less is more. Don’t compromise your quality of living just because you have a smaller kitchen. First, you need to decide what you need and what you don’t. Clutter can make your space seem a lot smaller than it actually is. Read more to find out our top tips on how to make the most of a small kitchen.

Banish your unused appliances

It might seem obvious, but the quickest and most effective way to make the most of your kitchen space is to get rid of your unused appliances. We’re all guilty of buying things we don’t need or use, an egg poacher seemed like a great idea at the time, but have you ever used it? A slow cooker may be handy if you enjoy experimenting with stews and soups, but they can take up a lot of counter space if not. In short, save your precious kitchen storage space for electrical appliances you use regularly.

Storing appliances correctly

Once you’ve narrowed down the appliances you really need, keeping your kitchen super organised is the next step to making the most of limited space. Although there’s no rule book of the ‘correct’ way to store your appliances, we have lots of space-saving tips and tricks you can use. See a breakdown of our favourites below:

·         Stack appliances neatly rather than pushing them to the back of the cupboard, it saves space and makes them easily reachable. If your appliances are difficult to access, they’re more likely to be neglected!

·         Only keep regularly used appliances on countertops. Appliances that are used less frequently should be stored away in cabinets, especially bulky items like bread makers and mixers.

·         Wrap the cord around each appliance after use and keep smaller attachments in zip lock bags.

·         Give your kitchen a regular clear-out, so unused appliances don’t take up precious space.

Multi-use appliances

Don’t feel like you should go without just because you have limited space, the key to making the most of a small kitchen is being savvy with your kitchen appliances. Integrated products such as microwaves can save valuable counter space and there’s a variety of multi-use items available too.
