Looking for more sustainable home appliances?

11th Apr 2022

More and more, people are looking to live sustainably to save money and to help protect the environment. With such a wide choice of appliances and technology available these days and the rising price of energy, it can be a bit overwhelming! We’ve tried to break down all the information you need to pick out the best energy saving electrical devices.

When purchasing a new appliance, there’s lots to consider. Maybe one of the most important factors nowadays is the product’s energy efficiency due to the technology it uses. Not only will it reduce your carbon footprint but in the long run it will save you money too.

There are six different technologies we’d like to highlight that can help keep your home as eco-friendly as possible. They fall under three pillars: energy efficiency, recyclable (or made from recyclable materials) and water saving.

Auto Dosing

Auto dosing uses sensors in your washing machine to automatically add the right amount of detergent. This reduces the risk of unnecessary waste and repeat rinsing; therefore, saving on your water and energy bills.

Induction Hobs

Induction hobs create a magnetic field between the element and the base of your pans, so less energy is wasted heating the cooking surface. They are also quicker to heat up so cooking will be more efficient saving you time and money.

Washable Filter

When you buy a vacuum cleaner, make sure it has a washable filter. It means you don’t have to replace a disposable filter every 6 – 12 months. Just wash with water and re-use to reduce your impact on the environment.

Eco Programmes

Eco programmes can take a little longer than regular cycles but save a lot of energy. In a dishwasher, an eco programme heats the water slowly reducing overall energy consumption.

Heat Pump Technology

Some more modern dryers use heat pump technology, warm air is re-used making them very energy efficient. They’re more expensive to buy, but you will save money in the long run!

Sensor Drying Technology

This technology automatically detects the size and weight of the laundry load, so the dryer is only on as long as it needs to be, then it turns off saving energy. Once again, sensor drying technology is found with the top of the range models but will be more cost effective.

The Energy Label

You may or may not have heard of the energy label, but since its introduction we have seen massive improvements in energy saving technology. It has made it much easier for consumers to compare devices based on their energy saving rating.  Even more so since it was updated in 2020, bringing further savings to consumers as well as meeting environmental commitments set by manufacturers and the Government.

Please see a breakdown of the 2020 changes by device below:

Washing Machines & Washer Dryers
More than 55% of washing machines placed on the EU market were ranked A+++ on the label, making it difficult to differentiate between products.
How have the changes helped?
•Fairer Rules - Enforced through more realistic calculations.
•Water Saving - 711 million m3 of water by 2030.
•Energy Saving - 2.5TWh of electricity per year by 2030.
•Household Savings - European households will save an average of £130 in electricity over the lifetime of their new washing machine.

Fridges & Freezers
Half of domestic refrigeration appliances placed on the market in 2014 claimed one of the top two energy ratings (A++ or A+++).
How have the changes helped?
•Fairer Rules - Enforced through more realistic calculations.
•Energy Saving - 10TWh of electricity per year by 2030.
•Household Savings - European households will save an average of £100 in electricity over the lifetime of their new fridge or freezer.

Dishwashers
More than 60% of dishwashers placed on the EU market ranked A+++ or A++ on the label, making it difficult to differentiate between products.
How have the changes helped?
•Fairer Rules - Enforced through more realistic calculations.
•Water Saving - 16 million m3 of water by 2030.
•Energy Saving - 2.1TWh of electricity per year by 2030.
•Household Savings - European households will save an average of £60 in electricity over the lifetime of their new dishwasher.
